Joseph Oregon

Joseph is located in Wallowa County east of La Grande, between Enterprise and Wallowa Lake State Park, on Highway 82. This secluded town sits near Wallowa Lake State Park and is considered the gateway to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

Joseph officially became a town in 1887. The old west heritage is still alive in town today. The community of Joseph was named for Nez Percé chiefs, Old and Young Joseph.

The latitude of Joseph is 45.354N, longitude is -117.228W. Elevation is 4,191 feet and estimated population is 1,100. Joseph was formerly called Lake City and Silver Lake. Wallowa Lake State Park, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Eagle Cap Wilderness are all near the town of Joseph. Joseph is also home to the Wallowa County Museum.

The city sponsors the annual Chief Joseph Days Rodeo each July (one of the top outdoor small rodeos in the nation, running for over 60 years), the Bronze, Blues and Brews festival each August since 2001, and the Alpenfest (Swiss-Bavarian festival in the traditional Oktoberfest style) the last weekend of September at Wallowa Lake since 1974.
